We're Cleaning Up Beaches in Texas!

So excited for tomorrow because I'm heading down to south Texas near the Gulf to participate in the Texas General Land Office's Adopt-A-Beach program on Saturday! This Saturday's cleanup is their annual fall cleanup, and the 27th year in an efforts to keep our coast and marine life a safe place for everyone to enjoy. Over 17 million pounds of trash have been collected by volunteers on these cleanup days, amazing isn't it?

Many oil and gas companies are among the list of corporate sponsors this year. To name a few: Shell Oil, Apache Corp, Cameron International Energy, HNTB, Halliburton, and others. The Ocean Conservancy is also a sponsor, known for their vision to protect oceans and marine life across the globe, including our Gulf of Mexico boarding Texas. I went to one of their cleanups back in high school, it was a lot of fun so excited to return to do it again!

Did you know that the Gulf area has one of the fastest growing regions in the United States? The Gulf coast is 56 million strong and accounts for nearly 20% of the total population of the United States. This is one of the top reasons our state holds annual cleanups so we reduce the amount of waste that is pushed into the ecosystem. Marine debris is a global problem, but can be solved with local impact from coastal cleanups.

Have a great weekend! I'll have a update post on how the cleanup goes the beginning of next week.
