Those who follow ArtSea Chic on Pinterest know that not only do I love to pin, but I love to pin things that will actually benefit me and others who have the same interests. My board, Health and Wellness is just that, and includes everything like foods to eat, exercise tips and beauty tricks.
Recently I've been looking into how water infused with different fruits and vegetables can help curb certain medical and physical conditions like PMS (ladies you know what I'm talking about), weight loss, infections and simply flushing out all the bad stuff you don't want in your body without taking medication to make it happen.
My sister actually introduced me to the world of fruit juicing which blends together about 4+ different fruits, herbs, or vegetables into a glass to drink up and that's when the breakdown process your body goes through kinda clicked for me. Everything solid you eat has to be ingested and then broken down by acids and enzymes in your stomach first. This takes up more time and energy (why you feel tired after consuming a great meal) for getting the nutrients and vitamins into your blood stream. So what's the quicker way to help get everything to where it should go? - juicing the food or simply infusing it into water. I chose to take on the water infusion practice, simply for the water consumption because I always try to drink about 16oz. every day, so figured it wouldn't be that hard to start putting some more health benefits into my water consumption.
I chose to try out a recipe I saw on Pinterest containing apples and cinnamon sticks. Seemed simple enough for the first try.
I actually never knew that these two combined together could add so much goodness to your body. Here's the list compiled below taken from different sources and other water detox websites.
Apples have been shown to:
*Lower LDL (the bad cholesterol)
*Protect and strengthen bones
*Help prevent several types of cancer
*Assist in weight loss
*Boost exercise endurance
*Remove toxins that come from high-protein foods
Cinnamon has been show to:
*Regulate blood sugar levels
*Boost cognitive function and memory
*Natural remedy for headaches and migraines
*Inhibit bacterial growth
*Reduce the proliferation of leukemia and lymphoma cells
*Control insulin and cholesterol levels by decreasing the bad cholesterol while increasing the good cholesterol
*Helps reduce the creation of fat

Pretty awesome how you can drink your way with water to better health. To make the apple cinnamon detox water you can use any type of apple you'd like (preferably organic) and 3-4 cinnamon sticks. I used Fuji apples, but the others best to use for flavor are: Granny Smith, Red Delicious, Braeburn, or any apple from a tree organically grown without using a lot of pesticides. You only need 1 sliced apple.
Whether you purchase non-organic or organic apples from the store, make sure to either use a natural produce cleanser or rise under water for at least 20 seconds rubbing the apple to get any pesticide residue, dirt, and germs off the outside skin. Stores don't wash them for you, so you gotta do it yourself, plus think of all those hands that have touched them before you do - grossness.
If you don't like the skin of the apple, you can peel it off, but I'd recommend keeping it on, as the apple skin is actually what has a lot of the nutrients that you want to infuse into the water. So after you cut the apple into slices, fill up a pitcher (I used a 2.5 quart) half way with water and then stick the apples and cinnamon sticks into it. Then continue to fill the pitcher. If you can manage to use a pitcher with grates, that will be so much easier for you because it will prevent the apples and cinnamon sticks from falling into your glass. You just want the water.
Stick the pitcher in the refrigerator overnight to infuse and make the water cold, it tastes better this way. I'm going to start off drinking one glass in the morning and then take a 16oz water bottle with me wherever I go to drink that the rest of the day. I must admit, the taste is going to have to get some getting used to. But on a regular basis it's recommended that you drink 2 liters throughout the day - which is about 2 quarts (so that whole pitcher in my picture).
When you start getting small pieces of apple in your glass, or when the apples start to turn all brown, it's probably time to change them out and put new apple slices in.
